What Covid-19 Teaches Us About Sustainability
The economic slowdown improves the environment

Sustainability. Another major challenge that people face in the early 21st century, and after 20 years, it seems we are starting to understand just how crucial it can be. Yes, believe it or not, even more than your mobile phone. Without sustainability and a proper environment, society will not be able to progress and will experience a significant slowdown in the very short term.

With the Industrial Revolution, and without realizing it at the time, we began to pollute the world more directly. Slowly, this increase in production, seen as an improvement for society, has been increasing the environmental footprint to this day, without regard for much of our society.

It took Covid-19 to clearly tell us that society must take action, and together with governments, we must mitigate this warming.

The economic chaos caused by Covid-19 is leading to an improvement in the environmental footprint worldwide. Countries like the United States and China are showing fantastic improvements in air quality compared to the beginning of the pandemic. Coal consumption has fallen by more than 36% compared to last year in China. In general, the air, land, and sea are cleaner than ever.

All of this demonstrates that all economic activities have a total impact on global warming; in fact, according to an IRENA report, if we continue to act in the same way, emissions of 34.8 Gt/year are expected with a temperature increase of between 2.6°C and 3°C.

This worldwide economic slowdown is showing that consumption indeed accelerates the warming process, and the data clearly show this for this year. Therefore, it is necessary to continue with all the work that has been done in renewable energies in recent years and to accelerate the implementation of these renewable energies in as many sectors and countries as possible.

We need to meet the demands and convert all energy sources into clean and renewable ones for the common good of society, and all countries must collaborate through these energies as part of the international plan approved by the UN in its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Through this plan, we give the world an opportunity to work together to improve the lives of everyone in society, without leaving anyone behind, and to promote the protection of the environment.

Remember and act... If we can achieve this, we will undoubtedly be able to continue using our mobile phones!"
